Sultan Satuyev, Vainakh Avia's director, as written at Radio Free Europe: Radio Library told the Interfax news agency that a foundation named in honor of the assassinated former Chechen leader Akhmad Kadyrov purchased the aircraft for the airline.

Future Air Navigation System

Aircraft are operated using two major methods; Positive Control and Procedural Control. Positive Control is used in areas which have radar. The controller "sees" the airplanes in the control area and uses VHF voice to provide instructions to the flight crews to ensure separation. Because the position of the aircraft is updated frequently and VHF voice contact timely, separation standards (the distance one aircraft must be separated by another) is less. This is because the air traffic controller can recognize problems and issue corrective directions to multiple airplanes in a timely fashion. Separation standards are what determines the number of airplanes which can occupy a certain volume of airspace.

Procedural Control is used in areas (such as oceanic and landmasses) which do not have radar. The FANS concept was developed to improve the safety and efficiency of airplanes operating under Procedural Control. This methods uses time-based procedures to keep aircraft separated. The separation standard is determined by the accuracy of the reported positions, frequency of position reports, and timeliness of communication with respect to intervention.

Non-FANS procedural separation uses Intertial Navigation Systems for position, flight crew voice reports of position (and time of next waypoint), and High Frequency radio for communication. The INS systems have error introduced by drifting after initial alignment. This error can approach 10 nmi. HF radio communication involves contacting an HF operator who then transcribes the message and sends it to the appropriate ATC Service Provider. Responses from the ATC Service Provider go to the HF radio operator who contacts the airplane. The voice quality of the connection is often poor leading to repeated messages. The HF radio operator can also get saturated with request for communication. This leads to procedures which keeps airplanes separated by as much as 100 nmi laterally, 10 minutes in trail, and 4000ft altitude.

These procedures reduce the number of airplanes which can operate in a given airspace. If marketing demand pushes airlines to operate at the same time on a given route, this can lead to airspace congestion which is handles the issue by delaying departures or separating the airplanes by altitude. The latter can lead to very inefficient operation.

Future Air Navigation System (FANS) is a standard developed by the air transport industry to allow more aircraft to fit into a given volume of air space. A number of generations of FANS standards are covered by the single term, progressing from simple automations of current processes up to rather futuristic approaches.

Communication Improvements

This involved a transition from voice communications to digital communications. Specifically ACARS was used as the communication medium. This allowed other application improvements. An application was hosted on the airplane known as Controller Pilot Data Link Communication (CPDLC).

This allows the flight crew to select from a menu of standard ATC communications, send the message, and receive a response. A peer application exists on the ground for the Air Traffic Controller. They can select from a set of messages and send communications to the airplane. The flight crew will respond with a WILCO, STANDBY, or REJECT. The current standard for message delivery is under 60 seconds one way.

Navigation Improvements

This involves a transition from Inertial Navigation to Satellite Navigation using the GPS satellites. This also introduced the concept of Actual Navigation Performance (ANP). Previously, flight crews would be notified of the system being used to calculate the position (radios, or intertial systems alone).

Because of the deterministic nature of the GPS satellites (constellation geometry), the navigation systems can calculate the worst case error based on the number of satellites tuned and the geometry of those satellites. (Note: it can also characterize the potential errors in other navigation modes as well). So, the improvement not only provides the airplane with a much more accurate position, it also provides an alert to the flight crew should the actual navigation performance exceed the required navigation performance.

Northwest Airlines will hire more pilots

The Northwest Airlines has announced that they will cut a schedule and hire more pilots. This is because of the raising of canceled flights, so Northwest Airlines made this decission.

As reported in the news release from Detroit News, The Eagan, Minn.-based airline, which uses Detroit Metropolitan Airport as one of its hubs, canceled 43 flights Tuesday, including 15 that were scheduled to depart from Detroit.

Northwest also operates major hubs out of Minneapolis and Memphis, Tenn.

As of 9:30 a.m., Northwest has canceled 16 flights today, including two that were scheduled to take off from Detroit. The data comes from www.FlightStats.com.

The memo said that up to 300 new pilots will be hired over the next year after Northwest hires back hundreds more pilots that have been on furlough for months. It also outlined a 3 percent schedule reduction in August.

That follows a promise of 3 percent reduction this month, though it's unclear if that change was fully implemented or what effect, if any, it had.

Yesterday's cancellations followed 62 cancellations on Monday and more than 200 since last Thursday. Northwest initially blamed the grounded flights late last week on strong storms that pushed through the Midwest, but by the beginning of this week, it elected to make no comment on the situation.

Officials at the Air Lines Pilot Association, which represents more than 5,000 active and furloughed pilots at Northwest, said the problem stemmed from a serious staffing shortage, which was the cause of more than 1,000 cancellations at the end of June.

Some furloughed pilots were rehired by Northwest after last month's grounded flights caused a public stir among customers whose travel plans were disrupted.

Bad weather make Northwest cancel seven flights

Because of bad weather, Northwest cancel seven flights of 18 scheduled to depart from Detroit Metropolitan Airport. System wide, Northwest had cancelled 22 flights of 231 scheduled departures or 9.5 percent, according to www.FlightStats.com.

As reported by Joel J. Smith at Detroit News Northwest said it was attempting to rebook the passengers on other flights.

A spokesman for the Northwest pilots union said he suspects the cancellations are storm related and having nothing to do with pilots bumping up against their 90 hour a month flying restriction. In late June, cancellations were blamed on the unavailability of crews because many had met their maximum flying hours before the end of the month. Severe weather throughout the month had played havoc with schedules, and Northwest also said the pilots had an unusually high number of sick calls during the period.

The airline said weeks ago that it was taking preemptive steps, such as tightening up its flight capacity, to make sure crew shortages didn't disrupt schedules at the end of this month and beyond.

Monty Montgomery, a spokesman for the Air Line Pilots Association and a Northwest pilot, said the heavy storms that came through Detroit Thursday afternoon likely caused both inbound and outbound flights to be cancelled. He said that Northwest planes and crews end up out of position for the regular schedule and it takes a few hours to get back on track.

Prosecutors call for closure of San Paulo airport after crash

The Sao Paulo's domestic airport will immediate closure because of the country's worst air disaster. The passenger plane was forced to abort its landing too.

The Sao Paulo's governor, Jose Serra, as reported in Guardian Unlimited admitted that the volume of air traffic at Congonhas, Brazil's busiest airport, needed to be drastically reduced following Tuesday night's accident, in which a plane belonging to Brazil's TAM airline veered off the runway, hit a nearby warehouse and exploded, killing all 186 people on board and three on the ground.

Video footage of the landing appeared to show Flight 3054 accelerating as it hit the notoriously short runway. Authorities said they believed the pilot had been trying abort his landing and take off again just before impact.

Rescue workers were forced to suspend the search for victims because of fears that the building at the crash scene was about to collapse. By early this morning, when the search was interrupted, authorities had confirmed 183 deaths. Fire chief Nilton Miranda told the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper he expected to find at least 20 more bodies inside of the warehouse. Four Europeans citizens, three from France and one from Portugal, were reportedly among those onboard the flight from the southern city of Porto Alegre.

Congonhas airport is renowned for its short runways. Pilots are instructed to touch down within the first 1,000ft (300m), or pull up and circle round again. Yesterday, another TAM airline jet was rerouted to the city's international airport after coming in at an unsafe angle.

Federal prosecutors said in a statement: "It is necessary to temporarily paralyse the activities at the Congonhas Airport in Sao Paulo until a complete renovation of both of its runways can be completed and there is certainty that they are fully secure for full operations." Shutting the airport would have knock-on effects on flights throughout Latin America.

The new 787 Dreamliner from Boeing

Boeing's first new model in 13 years takes advantage of the huge advances made in aviation technology in the past decade, and is capable of flying long-haul routes using up to 20 percent less fuel.

Servihoo reported that the Dreamliner boasts several revolutionary design features, most notably the use of high-tech plastic composites instead of aluminum.

Up to 50 percent of the primary structure of the plane -- including the fuselage and wing -- will be made of composites such as carbon-fiber, which reduce the weight of the planes.

And now, Boeing, the aircraft manufacturer has get up to 35 of 787 Dreamliner order.

The Dreamliner comes in three models for both medium and long-haul flights with a seating capacity of between 210 to 330 places.

Able to fly up to 15,750 kilometers (9,700 miles) without refueling, it could easily manage a flight between New York and Manila, or Moscow and Sao Paulo, routes so far only open to bigger planes such as Boeing's 777 or 747.

Boeing hopes the Dreamliner will be used to open up profitable flights between cities which so far have no direct links such as Seattle-Shanghai, Boston-Athens or Madrid-Manila.

While International Herald Tribune reported that Boeing now has orders for 677 of the new 787s from 47 customers. The new plane's first flight is scheduled for later this year, with the first delivery to a customer, All Nippon Airways of Japan, in May 2008.

Air Berlin's order is the largest single order placed by any European carrier, Boeing said. The airline also secured 10 options and 15 purchase rights for additional 787s, Boeing said.

The low-fare airline is looking to add long-haul destinations to its route network with the addition of the mid-sized, long-range 787s, which can easily reach Asia and the United States from Germany.

"The flight test will be the moment of truth," said Craig Fraser, an analyst at Fitch Ratings in New York. "That's what people are really focusing on. Does it go from a positive story to a very positive story or slide into trouble?"

The Dreamliner and the A380 reflect the different strategies of Boeing and Airbus as they seek to achieve the same objective -- cheaper air travel.

In response to Boeing's Dreamliner, Airbus has announced plans for a further new model, the A350. But the new plane is not expected to be ready for commercial use until 2013.

Mitsubishi believes of increasing regional jets order

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the Japan industry, the company that led the state-backed consortium behind the YS-11, believe that the world’s carriers will order 5,000 regional jets over the next 20 years, as developing countries expand their air networks and airlines shift to smaller, less fuel-thirsty planes.

About the YS-11 mentioned above, YS-11 is known almost exclusively among aviation geeks and nostalgic Japanese retirees. Its eight-year mass-production run ended in 1973 amid huge losses, and the last YS-11 retired from domestic service last year.

Masakazu Niwa, general manager of Mitsubishi’s aerospace division, said: “This isn’t just about a single project. Our goal is to take Japan’s aerospace in­dustry to the next level of development,”

Advanced technology is one of the Mitsubishi goal. We can see trough one of this example from the improvement of fuel efficiency, that I think this is very good for now since the increasing of gas price.

But not just the Mitsubishi, who try to get advanced, there are also Kawasaki Heavy Industries which flight-testing its new C-X military cargo aircraft, a Y35bn project funded by Japan’s defence ministry, and may market it for civilian use, and Honda which plans to deliver its first five- to six- passenger mini-jet in 2010.
